California Dreamin'

I just remembered I still have the most beautiful song in the world on my server, so I wanted to give you another chance to download it.

I've been making mix CDs for my trip across the south-western United States, too. I toyed with the idea of making them pertinent, but other than The Cure's "Hot Hot Hot" and Dressy Bessy's "California", none of them are.

Although Al Green's "I'm So Tired of Being Alone" is particularly relevant, I guess. Hopefully it won't be for much longer :)

Evening pondering

I was reading yesterday that Fawlty Towers was such a fast-paced sitcom that it had scripts that were twice as long as the average. And it made me wonder whether there are any languages where either the words and phrases themselves are shorter, or the speech itself is quicker, so that the people of that country actually say *more* to each other than anyone else.

And if so, are they more advanced? Or less? I have been worried for a while that the western world is reaching a level of decadence not seen since the end of the Roman Empire. There's a lesson in there somewhere...

Tiny things I love no. 2

The way a spoonful of sugar poured into very hot coffee produces the finest of beige foams, which rises almost imperceptibly to the surface of the liquid, making the coffee look 10 times more delicious and authentic. Mmm.

He's the man

It's just some James Bond publicity bumf, but it's kinda fun. Had I not passed the test, I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered linking to it :)

That's kind of weird

I was watching the rather wonderful 1957 film The Admirable Crichton this afternoon. I was thinking how good the young 50s-style actress look was, with one blonde lovely the pick of the bunch.

Looking at the credits I discover she's my godmother. Erk.

Ph34r my enormous IQ

Today I finally achieved something a little bit special. I managed to fold up my Minky clothes-drying-hanger-thing (ah - it's called an airer. Figures) without any damage to myself, my floor or my kitchen equipment. It's been a hard road, full of clattering crashes, pinched skin and crushed toes, but today goes down as the day I realied gravity was my ENEMY and released the catches with the beast on its side!

Of dinosaurs

(Sarah and I, chatting about our upcoming roadtrip that'll take us through Utah, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona, and the several fossil sites we'll come across:)

Mark: I wish Britain had badlands.
Sarah: Isn't that the Midlands?

Big fish, little fish, cardboard box

Last night I went regular, townie clubbing for the first time in years. I was *very* moody and difficult about it, but my friends were persuasive, good-natured and shelled out for my entrance fee, so I couldn't really complain that much.

And it was fun! Well, we probably managed about an hour and a half at most, which included a grand total of one (overpriced) drink each. Fortunately, chart pop music is probably the best it's ever been at present (though the lack of Justin Timberlake was noted with a frown), so I really rather enjoyed a fairly restrained dance. As always seems to happen, I ended up having a better time than any of my formerly-enthusiastic chums :)

There was one guy there, a short, average looking and extremely drunk bloke, who was literally wandering around snogging every available female. I saw him kiss one girl, but then as she took his hand and led him towards the bar, he pulled out of her grasp and attached himself to a totally different girl. His previous conquest went through an amazing visible gamut of facial emotions, from excitement to bafflement to anger to sadness, in the space of about 5 seconds...

You never see them in the same room together

I saw a picture of Jesus last night and thought it was Audrey Hepburn. Ah well.
