Caffeination.

I know Starbucks is evil. I really do. But frankly I can't resist it. I'd love to do the local coffee shop thing but they're all so crap. And they never have the right size lids.

Plus there are six Starbucks between my work & my train stop--seven if I go a little out of my way and cross one street. The walk is five blocks. Seven Starbucks. Five blocks. Seven Starbucks. Five blocks.

And yet I am moving here:

The pink X is me (Dear Starbucks.com, Uh, nice icon choice. Love, Brian).

The numbers represent the nearest fixes.

#1 is in an airport and therefore doesn't count.

#2 is FIFTY MILES AWAY.

FIFTY MILES.

Fuck.

I'm not sure I can justify using $8 worth of gas to go and buy a $5 coffee beverage. But damnit, I'm going to try!

You've made me feel better about myself, Brian. I've been to Starbucks for a coffee the last couple of days, and felt like it was a dirty little secret.

To put it in context, I had coffee in the Starbucks on Lygon St, Carlton, which is sort of like the very centre of Melbourne's Little Italy. There's nothing BUT coffee on that street. But they're all hip places with outdoor seating. I had a half hour to kill between finishing work and picking the missus up from work, and I wanted to sit in a comfy couch, in the warm, and play my Gameboy without being gawked at. The coffee itself was largely incidental (though admittedly not bad at all).

I'd rather support the small, local business types, but sometimes you want somewhere you can sit for half an hour without getting hassled or feeling like you're on show. Seriously, there's a time and a place for it. Although the place, apparently, isn't New Hampshire.

Oh, and when are you and Matt coming to visit?

Sorry, this blog comment seems to have turned into an email. Curses.

Looks like you're going to have to invest in a pretty little espresso machine if you don't have one already - I've gotten so into it due to the generally crap UK coffee that I can't drink anything else... then you can discover the joys of mailorder coffee beans, too!

I bought a coffee machine a few months ago. Now I can have the same coffee for like a quarter of the price. Also, I can stay in more often. Staying in is exactly what I need more of.

There is life after Starbucks, you'll see. I have an aversion to them because they took out two of my favorite places - the Big Fun store and the Friendly's Ice Cream shop.

Yes, but I drove past there today and it was all burned up! Karma? Divine wrath? You decide.

Worthington does need some more coffee places. Caribou doesn't cut it.

Bri - I'm stalking your new town. Have you checked out The Coffee Mill, which supposedly is on North Main Street and supposedly has free wifi and possibly even hippies?

The coffee places on Main Street all serve Green Mountain, which is somewhere around Folgers Crystals on the Undrinkability Scale. I'd sooner die than drink either.

We did see a coffee place off one side street yesterday that appeared to have its own proper grinders and such, but it was closed. Looks like I'll be my own barista from this point out, using my little Italian stovetop pot thing!

Hi new person named Matthew, are you a friend of Christopher?

I hear you can make coffee at home now.

The B&N in Manchester has a cafe. It might be one of those odd ones that serves *bucks but isn't a real one (like in Hyannis), but perhaps that will solve your fix. Alternately, maybe the Borders in town makes mocha-drinks.

I don't know this new other Matthew fellow. But he's clearly talking about High St in Columbus. In snooty ass Worthington, no less. I like the lesbian mecca, Clintonville, myself. And campus. And the Newport. Not so much Weigel Hall.

I'm convinced that Starbuck's stocks burnt, putrified beans that are well disguised when spiked with dairy and sugar products. Straight black coffee from there is WAAAAAAYY too expensive even if it was good and tasty. I felt like I was walking around with leaking Depends, having been fool enough to buy that bad, bad coffee from Starbuck's. And did you hear the latest? They are doing an across the board price increase?!?!?!
