Boys and their music habits

An interesting chart comparing the listening habits of US and UK AudioScrobbler users.

First thing I noticed: the almost complete lack of female artists on either list. Aside from Bjork (all the way up there at #44!), the only women I see are "secondary" band members like Kim Deal or Meg White or Regine Butler (not to denigrate any of their performances--all three are probably absolutely crucial to the makeup of their respective bands--but STILL, come on).

A lot of this can be explained away by surmising that AudioScrobbler requires nerdy plugins, and boys like nerdy plugins more than girls do. But that makes me a little uncomfortable.

I would guess that around 70% of the bands I listen to are female-fronted, even leaving out the faggy pop & jazz singers I like. I don't think I ever realized how male-centric mainstream-alternative listening habits have become. Or have always been. Sigh.

Anyway, I was going to leave this as a comment on HubLog but decided I could use a little content 'round these parts. So here you go.

In other news, today it is cold here. And it will always be cold here, forever and ever world without end amen. (Laura, consider that a Basic Eight shoutout)

That chart of artists is so depressing! My god - we might as well give up now. The terrorists have won.

I was always pleased how many women were on audioscrobbler, so it must be a cluster effect that made me think it was so: of my top 20 nearest neighbours, it's 9 girls to 7 boys who declare gender (and nearly all my neighbours seem to come from Norway...).

Having said that, there's hard statistics on this:
http://labels.last.fm/graphs/sex.php
- 25% women apparently. That graph should be called "gender.php", unless they're really interested in body parts attached to listeners .

Linda's helpful additional comment: "gays love nerdy plugins - and bishop's love sci-fi".
