Shed it like a change of season

Well, here's a new design thing, with a new tagline ripped from a Pernice Bros. song. Give it a refresh in your browser if it looks busted.

It's not exactly what I was shooting for but I'm too beat to fiddle with the CSS at this hour. The spacing is off but it's better than it used to be, at least. And hey, now it's actually white space instead of pea-green space.

I don't think I broke anything, did I?

"Subject Drop" by Pernice Brothers

Just got the album; still processing it. I'm sure tomorrow I will like another song more, but so far this is the most instantly accessible track for me. I like how this is a duet but Joe P. sounds like he wasn't even in the same decade (let alone studio) as the girl. My two major Pernice Brothers peeves crop up again, though: that damn inescapable mid-word (miID wuhUHRD) vocal tic (tiIC) & the repetition of the title repetition of the title repetition of the title repetition of the title. If there aren't enough words to fill 2:47, the song isn't done yet. Still, I'd rather listen to half-finished songs by this band than fully fleshed epics by most others. (Anybody know who the gal is? Answers on a postcard. I think it sounds like Nina Gordon, but that would be weirdness on the level of Petra-Haden-being-in-the-Decemberists) Update: I am informed that the gal in question is the lovely & talented Blake Hazard.

"See You in the Morning" by Mint Royale

Everybody knows that "Don't Falter" by Mint Royale is the greatest pop song of all time, sitting on a throne in heaven next to its Dancing Queen. I monitored the MR boys (boy, now) for a few years after the release of that classic single, but nothing else they did really held my interest in the same way. Their new album is pretty ace, though, even the track with the lousy English rapper (see also: Saint Etienne). Here's the title track: it's warm and smooth and if the lyrics are a touch on the generic side it really only serves to make the tune more universal (see also: Stars). I just listened to it seven times in a row.

"Gatekeeper" by Feist

"February," April said, "Don't be fooled by that summer again!" A charming little samba-tinged breath that reminds me sonically of a Hal David composition crossed with something from Tracey Thorn's solo album. Leslie Feist's voice is equally distinctive, if not so resonant. It's funny how everything these days is "members of Broken Social Scene" this and that; I find Broken Social Scene almost entirely unlistenable but I could listen to Metric or Stars or Jason Collett or now Feist all day. Or night, as the case be. This isn't even my favorite song on her latest album, but it's the first track and it's seasonal and it's lovely and I figure either you'll like it or you won't.
