New choons.
I finally got around to swapping out the mp3s in the sidebar, so those of you reading the site feed might want to clicky click and have a look.
I'm also in the process of tidying stuff up in general: fixing broken links, updating the rest of the sidebar, etc.
Don't you love those rainy days at work when there is just NOTHING going on at all?
Update: All done. I fixed my About link, updated the archive links, replaced all the dead links to sites I like & added new ones, added proper links to various Atom/RSS feeds, touched up my PHP so it's tidier and will speed rebuilds, blah blah blah. Also, I had a little chocolate tart.

Fubared!
A few days ago I picked up a new Buffalo AirStation wireless card for my PowerBook to replace my much beloved but aging and not-very-compatible Orinoco card.
While the Orinoco has served me well though many years of online time wasting, it never functioned identically to a "real" AirPort card, while the Buffalo card does. So now I get the benefits of an external antenna while retaining the simplicity and power of the built-in AirPort tools (as well as third-party utilities like MacStumbler and iStumbler). And yes, I am writing this testimonial with the hopes of landing a lucrative endorsement contract for Buffalo's extensive line of fine wireless products. CALL ME!
Anyway, none of this is the point of my story. The point of my story is that with my new antenna I have discovered a world of nearby access points by our apartment, with thrilling names like "Leni" (Riefenstahl????) and "Sn00py". And somehow, last night, drunk with antenna-boosted power, I somehow managed to break our own access point (formerly known by the creative moniker "linksys"--I wanted to change its name to Alice, after my cat, because I am a dork).
Long story short: Matthew was forced to spend the morning surfing on Sn00py. How often does one get to use a phrase like that, huh?

What the hell?
Tonight on my way home, I found myself in the middle of some kind of freaky flash mob.
Strangely, though, I haven't seen a thing about it online. In the World Trade Center PATH Station, at around 7pm, there were a whole bunch of people standing around, cell phones pressed to their ears, reciting the Constitution.
Loudly.
At least, I think it was the Constitution. It could have been the Bill of Rights, I can't quite remember.
Anybody have any ideas about what the hell was going on? It was very bizarre.

Please fix.
Why doesn't somebody redesign Noam Chomsky's blog for him? I'm no first-rate designer but the padding & margin issues make me weep silently to myself.

I can't believe I'm going to comment on this, but...
Gwyneth & Chris named their baby after Apple Computer? Oh come on. Coldplay's booking agent, Marty Diamond, named his child Apple last year. They probably got the idea from him. I know it's just meant to be a silly story, but still. Aren't reporters supposed to do a little research?
I should note that Leander Kahney didn't come up with this nonsense (it was all over the Post this weekend, too), but I can't stand him so I went with his link to mock. Just because I'm cranky.

Broken Glass
Today, Gothamist has an interview with Gilmore Boy Chris Eigeman. He doesn't tell us when there will be another Whit Stillman movie, though. Poo.

In which Six Apart goes all RealPlayer on your ass
So Movable Type isn't free anymore? Oh no wait, there's a tiny link way down at the bottom of the page for an incredibly limited version of 3.0 that only allows one author. That's so RealOne I can't even stand it.
The licensing page is also generally very confusing. It lists three limited licensing options, when in reality there are several other price points that you can find if you use the Get Help Choosing a License "Wizard".
Fuck, when did they get all evil? This is a bad way to start the day.
Update: The licensing page STILL reads "If you're using Movable Type as an individual, for non-commercial purposes, you should choose a Personal Use License. The personal use license can not be used for any , or a web developer purchasing a license on behalf of a client." You can't have my $150 until your 26-person staff fixes them typos, no matter how foxy you are, Ben Trott.
And I would like to clarify my whiny position a bit, too. I'm not angry that Six Apart is a company that needs to make money. The problem is that Movable Type is currently the frontrunner in a very crowded marketplace. People (like me) are bellyaching because we *love* MT and this new pricing structure will cost Six Apart a huge amount of market share. Blogger et al now have much more robust "free" offerings than MT does. Six Apart went from 2 employees to 26 in the space of just a few months and the new costs reflect *that expense*, not a huge growth in features or value. (from a comment I made on Mattsylvania.)

Comment dit-on "I don't have any cigarettes for YOU, you vile urchin you" en français?
Love, Brian
* Hate the keyboards. Hate the rain. Having a great time nevertheless. To anyone I owe email to: Sorry, we've had trouble finding free wi-fi ("le wee-fee") and the net cafés are not ideal. Home on Monday!
