Lift Those Heavy Eyelids
I should hate this record.
I should abhor it with every fiber of my being.
I'll run down the list:
- A collective, lead by a husband and wife.
- Who are very serious.
- Who are French-Canadian.**
- Who took their band name from a Radiohead (ugh) song.***
- Who play post-punk disco (there is nothing more over on god's green earth. Except maybe Ugg boots.)
- Who have an accordion.
- Who are on Merge Records.
- Who just got an "ALBUM OF THE YEAR!" 9.7/10 review on Pitchfork*, and a 5/5 on tinymixtapes.
If there is anything more execrably indie-gross than that, I don't
know what it is. This should be the EPITOME of
all-that-is-vile-and-annoying-about-music-today. It should be passé crap to be fawned over by New Yorkers with asymmetrical haircuts and forgotten ten minutes later.
But this album is... I don't know, I can't put it into words. This is a blow-the-top-of-your-head-off record. This is a keeper, this is a best of, this is a turn-it-all-the-way-up-and-shudder-in-ecstasy kind of record. This is mighty.
It makes all those other indie shits with big guitars and swishy disco drums and matching outfits look like utter posers. Not that they didn't look that way anyway.
Oh, I forgot. The name. It's Funeral and it's by The Arcade Fire. And you should go get it today. Because I said so.
*In a review containing the sentence "We consume the affected martyrdom of our purported idols and spit it back in mocking defiance." no less!
**Or maybe they aren't.
***Or maybe they didn't, and I imagined this bit entirely. Oh nevermind me.

Brobdingnagian Nerds Only!
[No really, I'm serious, very nerdy terrain ahead] Does anyone know how to uncompress a .7z / 7-zip file under OS X? I found a sourceforge project for such a thing but it was little-endian only and OS X is apparently, uh, big-endian. [Don't say I didn't warn you] While I'm reasonably tech savvy, compiling from the 7-zip source with GCC is beyond me without a little hand holding. If there's a quick, downloadable, drop-it-in-place-and-type-one-line-on-the-command-line kind of way to uncompress a 7-zip I would love to hear about it. Or maybe someone will hear this request and make one themselves. [OK, that's done. Lazyweb, help me please!]
Update (May 3, 2005): Looks like there's active development on a 7-zip port for OS X now. Finally.

Quaint as Fuck
Today I walked around my new neighborhood and took pictures. And then I made a little photo gallery.

This Frequency's My Universe
Well, I've written and rewritten this whole "where did the last month go?" thing about a dozen times and I can't make it into anything other than gibberish.
So anyway, I'll just do a quick fill-in. I moved to New Hampshire so my boyfriend could go to law school here. I got to keep my job, which I do via the "internet." I have been living in the boonies for a month now and I am getting a little starved for human contact (aside from the boyfriend, who is a super trouper). Which is weird because I generally despise most human contact.
I seriously miss New Yorkers. The rest of this nation is alarmingly badly dressed. All we have here are Abercrombie girls (I curse thee, Mischa Barton weird short short pleated skirt thing!) and LiveJournal boys, locked in some kind of eternal mall-war. And let me tell you, folks -- NOBODY WINS. Nobody!
But other than that, it's pretty comfy here. Our apartment feels like a shore house to me. All that knotty pine. It's like I'm on vacation all the time. Except for the whole "working all day" and "on call all night" thing.
All our neighbors are really Grey Gardens. I swear, within one block of my house there are at least a dozen completely insane ramshackle houses that look like they house raccoon-feeder nutjobs. It would be cool if it weren't so actively terrifying. At some point I will provide photographic proof; but my camera didn't survive the move and I feel funny borrowing the boyfriend's as it is so small and shiny I'm afraid I might swallow it.
We have one neighbor who is...well, let's just say she's not all there...and told me that a previous resident liked to go through people's mailboxes and throw things in the trash. Strangely, someone keeps throwing Matty's Sunday Times out every weekend--is the mysterious previous resident returning on a weekly basis? I'm confused.
It's too late for me to write anything coherent. Sorry this is so LiveJournal.
Your payment for reading this whole stupid entry is a copy of "You Are the Generation That Bought More Shoes, and You Get What You Deserve" by Johnny Boy, which I knicked from FluxBlog. It is unquestionably the acest pop song of the year. Utter genius. Filled to the brim with smashing anticapitalist rhetoric set to That Ronettes Beat. And the singer's name is Lolly. Can't beat that!
