fag vaudeville

Happy First Anniversary, Spittake! I should tidy up all your spelling errors.

I finished the Kennedy Curse. It was only last night that I discovered that it has a picture of naked Teddy "drilling off-shore" MY EYES MY EYES. Also he gives the Schlossberg childrens ages in 2002 as their ages in 1999. Man, I should write a letter to Saint Martin's Press!!

i wanna be an el-vette

The pizzeria (for it is they who are responsible, no?) by Grove Street PATH station has stopped with the KTU and started with the Christmas tunes. ACK!

I am working on my holiday cd. I have to record some Christmas records soon! And pull out those hannukah one, while I'm at it. Salsoul AND Little Marcy, what more d'ya need?

God, I hope I have some friends who can throw a good old fashioned holiday party with BOOZE and mistletoe. I wish I still had those disco ballish earrings.

"would you like to go out for a lobster dinner"

The new issue ofBust has an article on the women of WFMU, which is totally cool. It captures some of the weirdness of being a female music fan, in that there it is easier and there are more girl-positive spaces but it's still different for grrrlz. And there's the stench of the homosocial boys club, for when it comes to the WFMU message board's reception, it's all "Let's all talk about how hot the ladies are!" GAH (ok not all posts are like that, but jesus christ)

I guess I'm fed up with music boys either going on about how hot we are, approaching us in inappropriate ways ("is the prize a weekend with her?"), or flat out ignoring us (after going on about their dry spells or inability to pull.)

Still, the best thing the station ever did was the chick cut shirt.

(and this all comes on the heels of the guardian listing top music blogs and ooooo it's all BOYS)

High Holy Days

In commemoration of one the DDC's major holidays (40th anniversary, people!) I have been reading The Kennedy Curse Oh it is SO DUMB. I kept waiting for Klein to mention Carolyn Bessette's gold lavaliere and twin sister. Also, books without decent MLA style sources drive me up a wall. As an art history major, I couldn't even get away with that! It was all FOOT NOTES FOOT NOTES FOOT NOTES. So when Klein writes that "One Irish writer declared" you want to scream WHICH ONE, DICKHEAD??? cause god knows you can't tell from reading the endnotes. (see also that guy who wrote the Ready Steady Go 60s swingin London book were he ripped off passages whole from Marianne Faithfull's autobiography yet didn't porperly credit the book, UGG)

As for the Curse surely it's fucked up family more than anything? Klein mentions this but then throws out crap like Joe Sr offending a Hasid rabbi on a boat and that was the source of the curse and blah blah blah. And then it's kind of icky to describe Joe II paralysing a girl, and William Kennedy Smith's rape trial, and the Martha Moxley murder as "oh no the poor Kennedys!" No wait, it's not icky, it's offensive!

Not that this is going to stop me from reading the whole book or anything.

i don't feel tardy

For the second week in a row, I went to the library without my card. Last week I was able to check books out using just an on NYS ID but today I forgot my whole wallet. Oops. Luckily I have a secret corner where I stash my books that I've chosen, so I can run home and come back, card in hand. (Well, "run". Oh well, it's exercise!!)

I saw the weird guy again. I suspected he is the one writing about @shcr0ft and CIA implants and brains and stuff in the table of contents in all the magazines (See also the park bench in Van Vorst park). Glamour and Cosmo were missing so I read Self. Jersey City is 177 out of 200 best cities for women. Various suburbs in NJ were in the top twenty, guess who's gonna move, ha ha. But JC was 2nd in "Worst Sexual Health". ACK. This was like when I lived in South London and the Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham had the highest rates in the country for STDs, HIV and teen pregnancy in the nation. My instant reaction is of course "Don't sleep with the locals!!!" (WHOOOPS)

books I got
Without the City Wall: An Adventure in London Street Names
The Cook's Canon: 101 Classic Recipes Everyone Should Know
Most Art Sucks:Five Years of Coagula
The Victorian Underworld
The Meadowlands
How to Read a French Fry

what a feeling

Ooh, I FINALLY got the legwarmer project to work, and finished the first one. I think it's a wee bit too short, and I should have done something for the first few rows to stop it curling. I am going to write out all the porjects I have completed, and th eones I am working on.

Anyway, my legwarmer is pink and purple stripes and will match my stocking cap that needs sewing together.

Now I can wear my baller outfit again: BLACK with my pink wool cardigan.

chick discusses music, news at 11

OK maybe I will write about how ace the album version of "Call Me" because ENOUGH of the NO GURLS ALLOWED business. No wait, everyone luvs Morodor, I will discuss how FANTASTIC Larry Kert is! I find it odd to read in accounts of the original production of West Side Story that is was not very well received at all. Was it really that difficult and different 45 odd years ago?

SVU was soooo bizarre that I am going to have to discuss it on Do You See?

I am rereading Cynthia Heimel. Brilliant.

why does the mailman come at 5pm???

Sometimes you find yourself so irritated at people (at yourself and others) that you just feel like kicking a person in the shins, and then someone else does something so darling and sweet, and you are all better.

Also, I have heat again, hooray! I really can not deal with another abnormally cold winter.

weekend thoughts

Do Argentinian Jews speak Ladino? I thought that was just Sephardim? And Levinson isn't a very Sephardic name is it. CI, did you fuck up? I am gonna hafta research this.

The record fair was ok. I can't believe I was there for six hours. At around 3ish, I really did feel anxious to the point of vomiting. I dunno. I did get a nice dress! Trust me to find a pretty girlie dress amongst such BOYNESS. And, yeah, it was there. I got to show Captain Beefheart and Butthole Surfer DVDS, fffffffunnnnnn. I felt like I was fighting to control the remote, like, let me do it, don't do it for me. Maybe I just really territorial about remotes. I know I'm a young lady, but I can be very quick when it comes to figuring out remote controls, ok? And there are always creepy boys around. My friend got hit on!

So Friday I went to a booksale on the Upper West Side, and saw cuteish boys but they were showing off record scores and one FLASHED BUILDER'S CLEAVAGE and I am sooo traumatized. And then I saw one of the guys chatting with my dress seller and the other had his bag stashed behind the WFMU info table, so it was all kinda freaky. Well, the whole day was.

The booksale was ok, but iamagine the claustrophobia and horrible punters and sheer overwhelming amount of goods, but it's books instead of records, and bookish nerds rather than records geeks, and then squish it all into a room the size of the A/V Lounge, and whoa, I just gave up after a bit. But I got enough, and my total came to $18, and the woman adding up my purchases said after finally figuring the price of a 1988 Dissent (50 cents) "Ah, a good number!" and I was "huh, oh yeah, chai" and then realised the big New Jewish Encyclopedia was probably the big tip off that I would know from 18. I learned about chai in AP Spanish class, to tell the truth. Ha, that and the kabbalah! And this was 93-94 ages and ages before it became Jewish Sc13nt0l0gy.That was a high school class where I actually learned stuff! Not that I remember much Spanish, but, hey.

I finished the SNL orlal history 70s women: "yeah, there was kinda a boys club atmosphere" 70s men: "Boys club, what are they talking about?" hahaha. the "Oh cocaines was in the first seasons but not now" THEN EXPLAIN JIMMY FALLON!!!

But maybe the $18 thing will be good luck? And that goes to a good cause, and a good portion of today's record purchases went to a good cause too, and, yes I know I am trying to justify my spending, but yay secondary market! Yay!

i love you, star ledger

I am veering into dangerous Erma Bombeck territory but, I save $10 at the grocery store, today, oooo! Double coupons on items already on sale! And, this is soo sad, I am mad that I missed triple coupon week. And I'm going to send coupons to mom, that's how we express love in our family by sending clippings through the mail.

I am going to work on a review of Parade, and also compare it to USA Weekend. Everyone reads, nobody likes it!

Oh my god, the original Tzeitel is in the SVU rerun! And Estelle Parsons is in this episode who was in The Pirates of Penzance. My mix CD project keeps getting bigger and bigger.

sugar rush

I really need to read a ton of books so I can return them to the library tomorrow. I need to start The Kennedy Curse because, in a moment of inspired genius, I realised there is the curse no one is speaking abiut: looking like a Kennedy. Seen Eunice Shriver lately? Ouch.

I watched some sort of medical mystery show on Toxic Shock on Discovery Health and am trying to think of something to write about for Proven by Science. Not much mystery if you have been paying attention to women's health issues for the last 30 years. Why are all these young women getting bad orange makeup deathly ill? And how are they all getting toxic shock? The kicker is all the CDC and epidemilogist types say "well it was this certain brand, and it got recalled' with out naming naught Proctor and Gamble!. And the show makes out that the industry repsonded with an absorbancy standard immediately. Hey! Guess what! It didn't! (Are you surprised?) But, oh my, let's not get into the politics of women's health, shall we?

I bought the Star Ledger today so I can read Parade. Hooo, boy. But wow I've got lots of coupons. I missed triple coupon week at Shop Rite. Darn.
